On 8 February 2019, Sanna Vannar and Julia Rensberg from Sáminourra joined the Fridays For Future Climate Strike in Jokkmokk’s well-known Winter Market. The market in the north of Sweden attracts tens of thousands of visitors from around the world and is the foremost meeting place for Sámi people.
The Friday for Future strikes began with Swedish Greta Thunberg making a solo climate protest last summer by striking from school sitting in front of the Swedish Parliament. Since then, the movement has spread around the world.
“We are here to show how important it is to think about climate change, and that we can’t continue things as we do now with our consumption of natural resources,” says Sanna Vannar, president for Sáminourra to Swedish Radio.
Julia Rensberg, board member of Sáminourra also said:
“I hope it leads to a new global way of thinking. We only have one planet, and we need to take care of it.”
